180 degree rule and continuity editing

 180 degree rule:
In one lesson we looked at the 180 degree rule where the characters must be keep in the same relation according to one another. For example the main character could be on the left and their friend on the right side of the shot.  They must stay in this position and the camera can't  take shots past the 180 degree line unless the camera shows the movement from one side to the other. This is in order to orientate the audience, so they don't get confused and therefore become unfocused on the narrative.
Ollie filmed Sian and I stood together and talking. In order to break the 180 line he filmed the movement of him crossing that line.

Continuity editing:
This is editing that appears seamless, and can film something from different angles. The shots don't need to be filmed on the same day as long as the costumes are the same and the lighting or setting is the same or very similar. In our film we are using continuity editing in a shot where I run down a set of stairs and also in the scene where Sian and I argue. We filmed the same shot from loads of different angles and cut the shots together to show all of my journey.
